Renting a car

What do I need to rent a car in Cape Town?

Age, licence, excess, gearbox and the five-minute check that saves the argument at drop-off. Prices are 2026 guide figures across the main Cape Town desks; always confirm with your own rental company.

Minimum age

Most Cape Town rental companies require you to be 23 and to have held your licence for at least 1 year. A few rent from 21 with a young-driver surcharge of roughly R100-R150 per day. Premium and 4x4 categories usually start at 25.

Do I need an IDP?

No, not for an English-language licence with your photo and signature. Bring the plastic card itself; a photo of it will not be accepted at the desk. Non-English licences need an International Driving Permit alongside the original.

Excess and insurance

Standard cover leaves an excess of roughly R5 000 to R25 000 depending on the car class. Super cover reduces it to zero for about R150-R350 per day. Tyres, windscreen and undercarriage are normally excluded unless you add the tyre and glass waiver, usually R60-R100 per day.

Automatic or manual

Manual is the default and the cheapest. Automatics are a smaller share of fleets and cost around 15-25% more, so book at least two weeks out in December and January. Take the automatic if you have never driven on the left.

Deposit and payment

A credit card in the main driver's name is required for the deposit hold, typically R3 000 to R10 000. Most companies will not accept a debit card for the hold.

Check at pickup

Photograph all four panels, the roof, the windscreen and the wheels. Confirm the spare wheel, jack and wheel spanner are present, check the tyre tread, note the fuel level, and save the 24-hour roadside number to your phone before you leave the lot.

FAQ

Car rental questions

Do I need an international driving permit in South Africa?

No, not if your licence is printed in English and carries your photograph and signature. That covers UK, Irish, US, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and most EU photocard licences. Otherwise you must carry an International Driving Permit with it. You may drive on a valid foreign licence for up to 12 months from entry.

Should I rent a car in Cape Town?

If you plan to leave the City Bowl, yes. Public transport does not reach Chapman's Peak, Cape Point, the winelands or most beaches. Rent the smallest car that fits your luggage, and choose one with a closed boot rather than a hatchback with a visible load area.

Is an automatic car more expensive to rent in Cape Town?

Usually around 15-25% more than a manual, and automatics sell out first in December and January. Book at least two weeks ahead.
